At a recent meet-and-greet with residents in Charlotte, North Carolina, mayor Patrick D. Ballance heard a complaint that’s probably familiar to most mayors: People don’t know how to reach their city government. The city launched 311, a nonemergency phone number (  3-one-one) that staff can track via software, and the results have been impressive. “We know exactly how many calls we’ve received, and we can tell which areas of the city are least served,” Ballance says. The mayor hopes the service will one day be used to provide information about recycling and other services.

A nonemergency number isn’t a technology most police departments would consider, but it’s a good example of how technology can help modern  police work. As police departments look to cut costs and serve citizens better, technology plays an increasingly important role. It can improve efficiency or solve problems that have long been unsolvable. Tech to fight crime

When it comes to fighting crime, technology can do things that would have been considered science fiction just a few years ago. Take gunshot detection: Software that tests algorithms  can sift through audio files to distinguish between gunshots and other loud noises. When a gunshot is detected, the location can be determined based on a number of factors, including the duration of the sound, the gain of the microphone and the location of nearby landmarks. The information can then be relayed to police officers in as little as 30 seconds after the shot is fired.

“That’s just one example of a very exciting technology that’s coming into play,” says Louis E. Aracia  Jr., president and CEO of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). “There are other technologies coming on fast behind it.”

Shot spotter, as the technology is called, is being used in about two-dozen U.S. cities, including San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C.. Police departments are interested because gunshot detection can help officers get to the scene faster and can provide valuable information about crime patterns.
